Wolf Run Vineyards is located precisely in the middle of Sonoma Valley in Glen Ellen, between Sonoma Hwy. and Warm Springs Road. This ridge top vineyard rests at an average elevation of 450', slightly sloping in a curved southwest direction. These geographic qualities and the rocky, well draining soils presented a unique opportunity in 1997 to owner Josh Phillips. Cabernet Sauvignon was planted. Extensive research and testing led to a planting of St. George rootstock, grafted with Clone 7 Cabernet that delivers a small yield of truly exceptional fruit. The vineyard is farmed in a sustainable manner and has been designated by Sonoma County as an Agricultural Preserve.
Wolf Run Vineyards was primarily a supplier of high end cabernet fruit to other wineries until 2003 when portions of the harvest were reserved for estate wine. For two years Josh made different styles of 100% cabernet, varying the oak, time on oak, racking and handling methods and degrees of fining to identify the methods best suited for this particular fruit. As the individual grape is quite small and the cluster very tight, a really intense cabernet is produced, requiring special attention to bring a 100% cabernet sauvignon to the bottle. After vintage 2010, Wolf Run Cabernet was blended with 5% Estate Petite Verdot. The result was astounding. The 2012 Wolf Run Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon was offered in a competition for the winery's first time. In the fall of 2014, this wine was awarded: Best of Show- Red, Best Cab, and Best U.S. Wine in the 2014 Vino Challenge International in Atlanta, GA , represented by wineries from all over the world with over 700 entries. We are humbled, yet proud and know it is mostly about the vineyard. Terroir, as they say!
